Yes, I got all excited at the HDTV ads all claiming (especially Ten) to have "beautiful 5.1 surround sound". recently totally upgraded my whole home theater - Yamaha 6.1 Home Theater, Panasonic 32" HDTV, Panasonic DVD Recorder with DTV Tuner etc and was thinking about getting an optical audio cable from the tv to the tuner to enjoy this wonderful sound and sight experience. Out of interest I plugged the optical cable from the DVD into the TV then through the amp to see - yeah right! The best it could manage was a PCM stream that I didn't get from the anoalog cables and the aforementioned handful of shows on Nine. Whoopdeedoo! I guess it's not an outright lie, but it's pretty damn close.

you mention that ABC isn't full HD, but 720P is arguably better than 1080i anyway.

i thought some stations would be broadcasting in 1080P by now, if they really want to be able to claim the highest possible quality.

but yes, very disappointed in the lack of 5.1 around

Seven has broadcast at least 2 shows in 5.1: Heroes and Lost. This was during their "fasttrack" period, so maybe it only happened because that's how they received them and they didn't have time to strip them down to pro-logic ;)
