Nope, I can't say I belong to a C64 coverband but I wish that I did! Those nerds are from Denmark

If you listen to the most recent CNET Buzz Out Loud podcast they were talking about the new laptops not having firewire and Blueray, I can't remember what their theories were so I'm of no help to your blog :P

I believe the blu-ray drives available in other manufacturer's laptops have the ability to burn DVD and Blu-ray discs. But yes - part of the problem is the current drives won't fit in Apple's skinny laptops, so Apple would have to make them themselves right now if they couldn't get a third party to make them.

However, Mac Pros and iMacs have the room right now, so it isn't really an excuse for no Blu-ray on Macs at all.

I actually remember when Apple were slow to get DVD burners in their laptops - that also was initially due to size, as there were no slot-loading DVD-RW drives available at the time that were thin enough for the PowerBook enclosures. However, they had DVD-RW on their PowerMacs at the time, so Apple can't even claim they want consistency on all their Macs. Well they could, but it would be bull shit. :)

Your friend who bought the netbook and installed OS X on it -- and has it working better than you're letting on -- sounds awesome, and good looking too.

On the whole blue-ray thingy.. I wonder if there's anything to the fact that apple would probably have to manufacture their own blue-ray drives (for laptops) if they wanted to include them? Just curious... the other thing is that, if you had a blue-ray drive would that mean that you had no disc burning options? That could perhaps be another reason why the Jobster is hesitant to go that route.

Yes, I miss the days when there was real competition on the desktop. I'm also looking forward to the blu-ray drive for the Commodore 64. :-)

Even Acer are offering Blu-ray drives in their laptops. These things usually come down to dollars and licensing, very much like how Apple won't let anyone else use the Magsafe power connection, bastards.

You'll have to slum it if you want Blu-rayu and get an external blu-ray drive, but that probably isn't "cool" enough for most Apple users.

If there was a time when Apple was leading, it wasn't when Atari and Commodore was on the scene.

I think steve was referring to the extensive copyright measures you need to take within the operating system in order to support blu-ray playback. I remember a lot of controversy a while back about it when vista was first being introduced. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/01/20/windows-vista-content-protection-twenty-questions-and-answers.aspx
