In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream!

Back in 1993, I was working at The University of Melbourne. My job was teaching students the basics of programming in languages such as Miranda and C. Though not part of the course, in my spare time I decided I wanted to learn to program in C++. I usually learn a new language by tackling an actual application, so I decided I would learn C++ while making an Asteroids clone. Apologies to Atari, as I didn’t have permission.
I was just out of university with a low paying job (at the same university), so I unfortunately couldn’t afford an Apple computer. I did however have a non brand-name Windows PC, and a compiler courtesy of the Computer Science department I worked at. WinRoids was the result. I wrote it for Windows 3.1 (it did run under Windows 95, and probably Windows XP). It was my first Windows program ever written, and probably my last as I don’t really like Windows at all.

I never got around to adding sound (hence “No One Can Hear You Scream”). But the game played well at the time, and you could adjust the speed. It keeps its own INI file with options and high scores. I lost the source code long ago…
I recently (2025) got this running under Windows 3.11 on a DOS Box emulator, as it doesn’t run on Windows 10 or higher from what I have seen. So it is possible to get it to run if someone has any interest (I can’t imagine they do).
